Social Media in Schools: #TheLawMatters

The use of social media in the United States is a current norm among most people, including school-age children, parents, and educators. Social media is used for educational purposes: “35% of schools have student and/or instructor-run blogs”, “46% of schools have students participate in online pen pal or other international programs”, “49% of National School Boards Association (NSBA) schools participate in online collaboration with other schools”, “59% of schools say their students use social networking for educational purposes”, and “27% of schools have an online community for teachers and administrators” (Gupta, 2016). Due to the high frequency of social media use, schools must be aware of the legal discourse that impacts the use of school related social media. The use of social media in the educational setting is a fairly new concept, therefore there is not much legal discourse surrounding the topic. As issues arise in the years to come, there may be more laws created to prote...

The Teacher Evaluation Process: Fostering Instructional Growth

Teacher evaluation is a controversial topic, but a necessary process. Teachers are responsible for providing students with the tools and recourses to meet the standards through mastering content knowledge and academic skills, and the role of the administrator to be an instructional leader in order to foster high quality learning and student success (Stiggins, 2014, p. 8). The teacher evaluation process must be used as a growth-tool to ensure that students are receiving the highest quality of education possible. Although, some controversial legal requirements of teacher evaluation are present, the data collected through teacher observations and the evaluation process is extremely valuable in fostering instructional growth within the classroom. New York State Law Currently, New York State schools are required to evaluate the performance of classroom teachers and principals in an annual professional performance review (APPR) ( School Law , 2014, p. 381). The teacher evaluation...

When is it time to start prepping for the upcoming school year?

It's August... which means it's almost September! As the school year gets closer and closer, I start to do what I am sure many other teachers do... I start to panic. I want to be ready for my new batch of kindergarteners, but I am also not ready for my summer to be over. So that brings me to an important question: When is it time start prepping for the upcoming school year? I am TORN! I love creating all of the labels and nametags for my new little family, memorizing name spellings and imagining the excitment of the first day of school. It's like nesting for a new baby, preparing my heart, mind, and classroom for new energy. I love organizing my thoughts and supplies, setting up my classroom to be perfect. BUT - I also love the calm that comes before the storm. The chance to be still and consider all that has happened in the past year without stressing about the next. Having the opportunity to be at rest and reflext does not come often enough during the school year, s...

I VOTED!

This past Tuesday was local primary Election Day... and I VOTED! I hope you did too... if you were eligible. I showed up to the fire hall without even knowing what I was voting for... BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! I stood in front of the ballot before deciding for 20 minutes googling the candidates. I am a little disappointed in our society for not providing Millennials with the information that other people get when they watch the evening news. I want to be informed, but no one is informing me. My phone LITERALLY NEVER leaves my hand... or my wrist for that matter. I get updates from the national news networks on my phone and watch, but the local news doesn’t target me. Unless I look up information, it doesn’t come to me. It’s not in my newsfeed and it should be! After “researching” the candidates, I continued to be disappointed as an educator. I read through all of the websites for each of the candidates and they were all missing strong platforms regarding education. They all “support p...

This blog will explore educational topics from my point of view... a 23-year-old kindergarten teacher and definition Millennial... AND THAT IS NOT A BAD THING! Our perspective matters, we are the present and we are the future. It is our turn to make our mark on the world, one *patient* step at a time! 😊 -Micaela María Young
