I VOTED!

This past Tuesday was local primary Election Day... and I VOTED! I hope you did too... if you were eligible. I showed up to the fire hall without even knowing what I was voting for... BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! I stood in front of the ballot before deciding for 20 minutes googling the candidates. I am a little disappointed in our society for not providing Millennials with the information
that other people get when they watch the evening news. I want to be informed, but no one is informing me. My phone LITERALLY NEVER leaves my hand... or my wrist for that matter. I get updates from the national news networks on my phone and watch, but the local news doesn’t target me. Unless I look up information, it doesn’t come to me. It’s not in my newsfeed and it should be!

After “researching” the candidates, I continued to be disappointed as an educator. I read through all of the websites for each of the candidates and they were all missing strong platforms regarding education. They all “support public education” - but what does that exactly mean? So, I had to check out the other platforms like LGBTQ+ rights, health care issues, and support for small business and farms - things that can better our local area and our world.

Check out what happened in NYC: According to Spectrum News NY1, 28-year-old, progressive, democratic socialist, and millennial, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, won 57.5% of the vote over 10-year incumbant, Representative Joe Crowley. A HUGE upset! How did she reach her voters? SOCIAL MEDIA!

We are missing out on the millennial vote.

Solution: reach out to millennials through the platforms we use; SOCIAL MEDIA!

Millennials want to vote. Millennials want to make a change. Millennials want to be informed. Start reaching out to us!
